The Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Human Rights and Science (JMSHRS), in collaboration with the Police, Treatment, and Community Collaborative (PTACC), is excited to announce a call for papers for a pivotal special issue entitled “Deflection: A New Horizon for Police, Public Health, and Community.” This initiative seeks to illuminate the Deflection approach, a progressive strategy designed to redirect individuals with substance use disorders or mental health conditions away from the criminal justice system and into supportive community-based services.
Why Deflection?
Deflection represents a revolutionary paradigm shift within law enforcement, public health, and community services. By steering affected individuals toward assistance rather than incarceration, Deflection not only aims to enhance public health and safety but also to alleviate the burdens on our justice systems, reduce stigma, and foster a more compassionate societal approach to addiction and mental health crises.
Themes of the Special Issue
This special issue will focus on several key areas:
- Innovative Research on Deflection: We aim to create and promote accessible research that sheds light on Deflection strategies and their outcomes.
- Challenges and Growth: Identifying obstacles to and opportunities for refining and expanding Deflection practices.
- Philosophical and Conceptual Frameworks: Discussing the underlying philosophical and current conceptual frameworks that govern Deflection.
- Knowledge Dissemination: Sharing best practices and crucial knowledge to aid in understanding and implementing Deflection.
- Linkages with Global Goals: Exploring how Deflection aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focusing on health, gender equality, reduced inequalities, and justice.
